Preface by Massimiliano Aragona
In every generation there is a time in which all certainties crumble, and humanity seems to disappear. MEDU’s book “L’umanità è scomparsa” (litt. “Humanity has disappeared”) by Alberto Barbieri and colleagues tells the experiences of hundreds of migrants, children and adults, from the perspectives of twelve physicians, psychologists, and cultural mediators.
They became writers to tell their daily encounters with hundreds of men, women and children, who survived the state of violence and abuse in their countries and who withstood the atrocities throughout the impervious migratory routes of the 21st Century.
“In our collective work we tried to communicate what we lived during these years. We hope that the stories we have been told can witness this very delicate period of the century. At the same time we hope to awake the consciences of citizens from the other shores of the sea, to encourage understanding and listening to what happened and what is still taking place. Because these stories do not affect only them, but also us “inhuman humans”.
From 2014 to this day, 650 thousands migrants disembarked in Italy, the majority of which left from Western Africa and the Horn of Africa. Nine out of ten of them survived a silent holocaust which holds its bloodstained roots on the Libyan territory. In the meanwhile, about 14.744 migrants lost their lives crossing the central Mediterranean. However, no one knows the real number of those who perished as prisoners and slaves in Libya, or the number of those submerged by the Sahara’s sands. They are the witnesses and the souls of this book, and we dedicate this book to them.
