Lybia is not a safe heaven
January 21st, 2019–A cargo ship is bringing 100 migrants back to Libya.
The migrants, in critical conditions, were rescued near Misurata’s
shores. We can no longer ignore what is awaiting them in the Libyan
detention camps of torture.
“I was in Libya for 2 long years. When I arrived to Libya I was already
travelling for a year; from Eritrea I then reached Ethiopia and Sudan.
In Libya I was kept in 3 different detention camps. One of them became
known on the social media thanks to a detainee who managed to send a
video depicting the conditions we were forced to live in. They called it
“Code 403”. We did not have food, nor water. They forced us to be in the
dark, I did not see the light for three months. My eyes are sick, I
cannot see well anymore. No one cared about our health, nobody could see
a doctor. Not even the women. I saw 17 women giving birth. They would
just deliver their babies there, with everyone else. Half of the babies
did not survive.”
