Frontiera solidale. Medical-humanitarian assistance for migrants and refugees on the north-western border (Oulx)

The project aims to create a medical facility to guarantee primary health care services to all the migrants headed to France and coming from the Balkan or Mediterranean Route

Starting from December 2021, MEDU strengthens its presence in Alta Val di Susa to assist the migrants in transit to Oulx.
For migrants, Oulx represents one of the last stages in a long travel that can last from 2 to 6 years and which connects Afghanistan, Syria, Iran, Mali to the countries of northern Europe. The final goal of the people who arrive here is to reach France by crossing the border in Monginevro or Frejus.
Until 2019, the migratory flow was mainly composed of young men coming from Sub-Saharan Africa, while starting from 2020 there were numerous arrivals mainly from the Balkan route, and this represented a significant increase in women and very young children.
The goal of the project is to provide health assistance thanks to the creation of a clinic inside the new shelter house “Fraternità Massi”, a place where the migrants arriving in Oulx can stay during the night before leaving for France.

The creation of a multidisciplinary team guarantees an integrated and culturally sensitive approach, capable of responding to the needs of the most vulnerable people promoting their overall well-being.

The team will consist of:

  • a project coordinator;
  • a doctor;
  • a cultural mediator.

The presence of MEDU will also guarantee the regular monitoring and follow-up of the migratory flow and, if necessary, the reporting and denounce of violations of human and health rights.

Activities

  • First medical assistance and early identification of vulnerabilities during people’s arrival.
  • Referrals to social and health services in the area.
  • Information activity on Covid-19 prevention measures and distribution of PPE.
  • Monitoring and follow up of the migratory phenomenon in the Alta Val di Susa and drafting of reports for sharing the data collected with the actors in the area.
  • Coordination with other services, institutions and associations in the territory.
  • Advocacy and collection of testimonies, to make public opinion and institutions aware of the living conditions of migrants arriving in Oulx and the human rights violations to which they are exposed along the route.
